Effects of Short- and Long-term Ultraviolet B Irradiation on the Immune System of the Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio)¶

Carp (Cyprinus carpio) were repeatedly exposed to 0, 60, 120 and 240 mJ/cm2 ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation three times in 1 week (short-term exposure) or 12 times in 4 weeks (long-term exposure). The effect of UVB on the functioning of the carp immune system was studied on day 2 after the final irradiation. After short-term UVB exposure, the whole-blood respiratory burst and cytotoxic activity were markedly enhanced, with parallel responses in both the number of circulating granulocytes and in the plasma cortisol concentration of the fish. We carried out enclosure experiments to assess the potential deleterious effects of the alien species common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.), mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrookii Gir.), and pumpkinseed sunfish (Lepomis gibbosus L.) on water quality and food web in a severely degraded floodplain wetland, the Spanish National Park Las Tablas de Daimiel. With addition of either carp or pumpkinseed sunfish, chlorophyll a and turbidity levels, as well as concentrations of total phosphorus and total nitrogen increased. Does the Site of Blood Collection in Fish Affect Haematological and Blood Biochemical Results?

The values of haematological and selected blood plasma biochemical parameters of juvenile common carp (Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus, 1758) were compared between blood samples taken from caudal vein and heart to evaluate the influence of blood sampling body site on the obtained results in two groups of fish of different blood sampling order: I – first by caudal and then by cardiac puncture, II – first by cardiac and then by caudal puncture. In contrast, the intentional or unintentional subsidy of animal populations by human-derived feed resources and their ecosystem effects are poorly studied.
